West Highland Terrier
by John Ruggiero
The Westie is a fun companion dog. They are inquisitive, energetic,
and want to be a full-blown member of the family. Westies love
children and adults and want to be where the action is. Don't expect
them to sit quietly in a corner by the fireplace. If you're reading the
paper, they'll be in your lap reading it too! If you're relaxing in your
favorite lounge chair, they'll be relaxing right on top of you!
Westies were bred in Scotland in the 1890's to hunt small animals
such as fox and rabbits. They could easily chase the animal into its
underground den, grab them, and back out of the hole. Westies still
see small animals such as hamsters and rabbits as a "snack".
They treat cats and other dogs as "one of the clan" when raised
in the same household. But rest assured, the Westie will see itself as
"king or queen" of the household pecking order!
Westies are people dogs and don't like to be left alone. They do not
shed and do not have a "doggy" odor. However, their grooming
needs are "high maintenance" and they should be properly stripped
2-3 times a year by a professional breeder or terrier groomer.
Having them shaved like a Schnauzer by your local groomer can
result in skin problems over time.
